Description
29 PUNCHED CARD Message "MERRY CHRISTMAS" 1973 with Printout - RR Station to STNIn 1973 I sent a Station to Station Message to my friend Mike in Casper (32236), WY. I was in Alliance(30364), NE and used Detail IBM Punch Cards to send the message.
Note that the message starts with a 4ZZ header* (sorry this card is lost) then a 78 Y132236 destination card (sorry again, but the card is a Y130364 instead) followed by all remarks cards to sent the message.
Typing capital "X"s in the appropriate card
columns
in several cards created the large font message of "MERRY CHRISTMAS".
Often messages were sent with large headers like "ATTENTION" which were created in the same manner.
The trick to seeing if the punching was correct was to fan the cards and read the display in mirror image. SEE PHOTOS . The cards can be reversed in order AND then fanned to give the 'positive' image.
* a "4" in column 1 told the reader to read all 80 columns of each card. "ZZ" in columns 2&3 identified the program as a message.
Y132236 was the Lata of the Mike's Machine in Casper, WY Yard Office Burlington Northern Railway.
The Lata of my machine was Y130364. 30364 being the station number for Alliance, NE.
Side note: I showed the date November instead of December.
The last card is my signature card with my 3 initials and a 7 9 multi-punch to end the transmission.
These cards were punched out in 1973 and stored away ever since. The Printout was also printed in 1973 and stored away until now.
