Description
Para-Toluenesulfonyl Chloride, also known as Tosyl chloride, is a widely used reagent in organic synthesis. It releases HCl when it reacts with moisture making it lachrymatory.Only use in a fume hood!
The most common reaction performed with this reagent is Tosylation of alcohols. In this way it can act as a protecting group. Tosylates are also good leaving groups, which allows them to undergo various nucleophilic substitution reactions. Tosylates can undergo dehydration reactions catalyzed by strong bases, and some hydrides can perform deoxygenation reactions which result in alkanes. Tosyl Chloride can also be used in production of other reagents such as P-Toluenesulfonyl hydrazide.
This reagent is corrosive to metals and should not be mixed or stored with bases and oxidizers.
It also releases HCl gas when it reacts with moisture which makes it lachrymatory.
Only use in a fume hood!
