Description
An excellent example of a Civil War period 3 piece State of California Militia button. Albert# CA-2-A. Button dates from circa 1860-1865. Backmark reads " WATERBURY BUTTON CO. * EXTRA * ". There has been debate over the age of this backmark for years. I strongly believe that this backmark is a Civil War period backmark on most buttons. Waterbury Button Company most certainly did not stop producing buttons during the Civil War so after the 1850s Waterbury Extra backmark, this was the next logical evolution for a Waterbury backmark starting about 1860. Nearly all of the gilded finish remains. Button measures 22.26mm.See photos for condition details.
