Description
For sale is a pair of non-dug, two-piece, Civil War US Army general service (enlisted ranks, all branches) eagle buttons. These are the classic buttons of the northern Civil War soldier; Tice writes that the "preponderance of Union Army buttons found in Civil War camps and battlefields are of this type."The 'sack coat' (20 mm) size button, with the raised mark, depressed channel (rmdc) "WATERBURY BUTTON CO. * " backmark on a mottled or stippled background, is specifically listed by Albert as GI94A5 and by Tice as GEN215A44. On page 50, Tice lists this backmark and dates it "about 1861 - 1865."
This coat-size example is in excellent condition with a straight shank, no pushes, and some minor areas of discoloration. It also has a relatively well-struck backmark; many general service backmarks are nearly illegible due to the buttons' overall low production quality and wartime overuse of dies.
The cuff or kepi (15 mm) size button with a blank brass back is specifically listed as Tice's GEN215A56 (Albert's GI94). This example is in fair condition showing some wear and a bent shank; the shank has a possible repair or a minor soldering defect around the base but it appears solid.
For shipping, we use well-padded boxes, typically ship same- or next-day, and always combine costs on multiple lots (USPS insurance required over 0).
