    Description

For sale is one two-piece, non-dug, cuff- or kepi-size (14 mm) Civil War US Revenue Marine / Revenue Cutter Service button (Albert's FD4A).
Tice writes that "Congress established the Revenue Marine in 1790 to prevent smuggling and ensure payment of import duties.  The organization was renamed the Revenue Cutter Service in 1863.  By combining this group with the Lifesaving, Lighthouse, Marine Inspection, and Navigation Services, a modern Coast Guard was formed in 1915."
With a depressed-mark "D. EVANS & CO. / EXT" backmark, this button is specifically listed as Tice's RM209As1 and pictured in Plate D-22/7 .  McGuinn and Bazelon specifically list this button for this backmark and date it to the 1860s, while Tice dates both the button (p.167-169) and the backmark (p.22) to the 1850s.
This example is in very good condition with some evidence of wear and use, minor areas of dirt or discoloration and no pushes.
For shipping, we use well-padded boxes, typically ship same- or next-day, and always combine costs on multiple lots (USPS insurance required over 0).
