Description
CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA STATE SEAL BUTTON RECOVERED CS RETREAT GETTYSBURG on private property with permission. This button is a two-piece coat size Virginia Militia button (Tice VA229A1—Alberts VA 15) button in very good relic condition. The face has a slight push, som discoloration from ground action and a small amount of the original gilt. The reverse has a “HORSTMANN & ALLIEN NY” backmark. The shank appears to be missing or possibly flattened. This button was recovered many years ago by John Cullison who later sold his finds to the Rosensteel family. I acquired this piece direct from the Horse Soldier a number of years ago. A copy of the original Horse Soldier listing and the modern label identifying the recovery location and the digger (Confederate retreat route west of Gettysburg by John Cullison) will accompany the button. Please see the photographs for condition.
