This connector holds the end of the iPad's home button ribbon cable in place on the motherboard of the device (see pictures 3 and 4)
, allowing the home button to communicate with the iPad. There is a plastic latch that opens to loosen the connector and admit the cable and then clamps down to hold it firmly in place, with each of 14 metal pads on the end of the cable contacting its matching pad on the motherboard.
When removing the display of an iPad, it is extremely easy to break this connector (especially its tiny plastic latch)--it is the only insertion connector in this area; all of the others are the more common press-type connectors used in iOS devices, in which a connector at the end of the cable is pressed down onto a mating connector on the logic board.
Attachment of a replacement FPC connector to the iPad motherboard is via 2 solder anchor points on the bottom of the connector and 14 electrical solder contact points (see picture 3). This
    requires
    very careful removal
of the remaining connector piece (so that the soldering pads on the logic board are not damaged), and
    microsoldering
of the replacement. A good magnification setup (ideally a dissecting microscope: the entire part is ~ 1/2 cm in its largest dimension), an SMD (surface mount device) soldering setup for soldering the two anchor points, a fine-tip soldering iron, flux, and experience are all extremely helpful if not required.
If you are not familiar with these techniques, professional installation is strongly advised.

    IMPORTANT NOTE
: my previous listing of this item along with an analogous 18-pin connector incorrectly identified the 18-pin connector as the correct one for the majority of 6th generation iPads. THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
All 6th generation iPads, as well as 7th and 8th generation iPads (iPad 7 and iPad 8) use this connector, as does the original, 1st generation iPad Air
. (The second generation iPad Air, the iPad Air 2, uses a completely different connector, which I will be listing as soon as I have it in stock.)
If you previously purchased an 18-pin connector for your 6th generation iPad, I apologize.
Please contact me for a full refund
; you need not return the part. As far as I know, the only cable that uses the connector is part of the backlight circuit of a couple of iPad Pro models, and the connector almost never needs replacement.
My grateful thanks to Anthony of CooperTronics, Inc, for clarifying this for me.
