Description

When the War of 1812 broke out, America was caught unprepared. It adopted a new infantry button series that featured a script “I” on a plain background. An oval was placed under the “I” for a regimental number. However, when button production fell behind in 1813, the number was scrapped and some buttons were issued blank with no regimental number. Soon the blank space was filled with a star. The five point star was bold, but other varieties were produced with thin six, eight, and ten pointed stars. In 1816 the script “I” was replaced with a more ornate design depicting an eagle with spread wings. A shield on its left shoulder contained a small script “I.”
