RARE HISTORIC SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA BANK STOCK
The Anglo-Californian Bank was founded in San Francisco in 1873 by the Seligmans, a prominent London Jewish family. It was managed by Ignatz Steinhart after whom the Steinhart Hotel and Steinhart Aquarium were named.
The Anglo Californian Bank became the Anglo National Bank before merging with Crocker National Bank which later became part of Wells Fargo. Thus the history of this stock is directly linked to Wells Fargo Bank.
This is a very rare original stock certificate from the very first issue of shares in the Bank, dated circa 1900. It is finely engraved in the British style in London but issued in San Francisco. Some of the Californian shareholders were famous in their own right.

The San Francisco branch of the Anglo California Bank (limited) was incorporated on April 5, 1873, and it owes its existence to English and California interests, which were allied for the purpose of doing a local commercial and foreign exchange business. The bank has been eminently successful and in the course of its career it has shipped immense quantities of bullion to China, India and other foreign countries. It has contributed largely to the development of California and has gained the confidence of the entire banking world.
The capital stock is ,000,000, of which over ,000,000 has been subscribed and ,500,500 paid in. The latest report of the Bank Commissioners upon the affairs of the bank is a flattering one.
The headquarters of the bank are in London, and the business in this City is under the immediate control of Ignatz Steinhart and P. N. Lilienihal. The names of the directors are as follows: Isaac Seligman, E. H. Lushington, S. Monteriore and J. Simon. A. L. Seligman is cashier, H. H. Fowler, M. P., and J. E. Cussans secretary. The wise and conservative policy adopted by these financiers has given the bank a reputation for stability that will prove a sufficient guarantee for the future.
